When Horton’s Home Lighting of Chicago lost their friend and co-worker, 31-year old Pamela Herts in 2001 to cancer, a determined group of friends started The H Foundation to raise money and find a cure for this terrible disease. Since its start, the organization has raised $6.4 million. All proceeds benefit Basic Science Cancer Research, which supports the early, novel ideas that in turn lead to additional grants.The money this group has raised together with the Robert H Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University, so far, has resulted in over $35 million in additional research funding. However, until there is a cure to stop this disease that does horrible things to a person and their family, there is still much work to be done.

On April 20th, four students from the Elkhorn Area High School’s (EAHS) SkillsUSA Club and their advisor Mr. Fred Ganter came to Precision Plus and made a presentation to a small group of our employees. They came here to show off their accomplishments and garner financial support for their first-year club.

Walworth County business leaders, educators, and engaged community members came together April 20th at the Elkhorn campus of Gateway Technical College to celebrate the new $1.25 million RPM Manufacturing Center. The project included a new 3,200-square foot expansion, which is dedicated to machining and houses both manual and state-of-the-art CNC mills and lathes (Haas), as well as a CNC Swiss lathe from the Japanese builder Tsugami and their U.S. Importer Morris Midwest.

Precision Plus is proud to be part of launching this significant project, and we are excited to see what it will contribute to the future of our industry. Investments have been made in infrastructure, equipment, curriculum, and quality instructors. However, consistent and ongoing support from our entire community to deliver a steady pipeline of passionate students is necessary to ensure its success over the long term. Together, let us demonstrate to our young adults what a career in manufacturing looks like and show them the education path that will help them get there, with the best value for their investment.

The RPM Manufacturing Center was made possible by public-private partnerships. Other key contributors who dug deep to help Precision Plus realize this dream for Walworth County include:

Breakfast Food Drive is a Success!

: Officers of the Elkhorn Area High School FFA Club know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Here they are organizing donations made by Precision Plus team members.

All over the country, and even in our own community, there are families who struggle to put breakfast on the table. When MaryEllen Wright, Social Worker for the Elkhorn Area School District (EASD), visited Precision Plus last December to pick up donations for the Angel Tree project, she made the comment to Dale Wittlieff, Director of Quality & Continuous Improvement, that the cereal that was contributed is especially helpful for families in need during times when the school is closed such as weekends and holiday breaks. Unfortunately, for many children, having breakfast at school is their only option.

Gateway Technical College’s Manufacturing Center in Elkhorn, Wisconsin is Up and Running!

On January 11, 2016, the Spring Semester began at all three campuses of Gateway Technical College (GTC) in Racine, Kenosha, and Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

The event had a deep significance for the Walworth County community and, particularly, the precision micromachining industry, as students and instructors at the Elkhorn Campus were able to hold classes in the brand new Manufacturing Center. The Center becomes the second college facility in the country to offer Swiss precision-specific programs.

One of the key ingredients for bringing this project to life has been the support provided by the industry. Recently, Starrett, a precision tools manufacturer, announced joining the Elkhorn Center as a precision measurement certification partner, which allows graduates to earn Precision Measurement (PM) certifications. Conversations with possible partners in the engineering and additive manufacturing areas are also taking place.

The GTC Board supports the new endeavor, and has approved an additional $100,000 for updates in the welding lab to include new welding equipment along with a complete makeover of the space.

How To Attract, Develop and Retain Our Future Workforce?

On November 19, 2015, twenty-two Walworth County manufacturing business leaders held a roundtable meeting to discuss the possible creation of a manufacturing council dedicated to encourage, sustain and grow the manufacturing industry in Wisconsin’s Walworth County. According to a recent survey, the manufacturing sector provided 13.3% of all jobs in the county for the year 2013.

The breakfast meeting took place at Precision Plus (PPI) of Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Coffee, juice, water and light breakfast snacks were provided by First Business Bank.

Third Annual Reindeer Run of Elkhorn, Wisconsin

For the third consecutive year, Wisconsin’s City of Elkhorn Recreation Department organized “Reindeer Run,” a 5K run/walk for adults, and a 100-yard “Santa Sprint” for kids 12 and under. This fun event took place on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Sunset Park in Elkhorn. Participants and spectators were encouraged to don their favorite ugliest Christmas sweater, and bring non-perishable food items to donate to the local food pantry. Precision Plus (PPI) was a proud sponsor of the event.

Veterans Day (originally called Armistice Day) has been observed for nearly a century. On November 11, 1918 at 11:00 a.m., a temporary truce was called to cease the fighting at World War I. Seven months later, the war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles.

In November of 1919, President Wilson proclaimed:

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

Wilson also declared November 11, 1919 as the first date to commemorate the ceasefire. Armistice Day did not become a legal national holiday until 1938. However, it was not until 1954, that the 83^rd U.S. Congress approved to change the word “Armistice” to the word “Veterans,” and recognized this day to honor all Americans who served to protect our country.

On Veterans Day 2015, we extend our gratitude to our team members, and honor and celebrate them as well as all American veterans “for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

The Elkhorn Area School District Administration recommended to its Board of Education to form an advisory committee to explore the facility needs of the district. Following a community-wide survey addressing the district’s needs and the likelihood of community support for such needs, the advisory committee made its presentation to the board on December 15, 2014. The survey was conducted by an independent agency.
