A Mother’s Day Message

Heart2How can one properly thank their mother on this day?

The upcoming Mother’s Day gives us all reason to pause and reflect back on all our mothers have done for us. We may have certain vivid memories that stand out, but likely, there are far more examples of subtle, yet enduring, behaviors we can attribute to, arguably, our most influential person growing up. Some of the things that were instilled in each of us from a young age, and may have driven us crazy, we are now practicing with our own children, likely with the same effect.

My mother was the warm, nurturing type that, while very loving, had no problem correcting me when my actions did not live up to her expectations. This may have been just part of my growing up and testing boundaries, but I did not make it easy for her. However, deep down I knew she was right. I still ask myself when faced with a challenge, “What would Mom do?,” and, “Would Mom approve?”. Undoubtedly, these questions continue to be a good test for any important decision.

Like many, I am left with a treasure trove of memories and teachings, but I long for the chance for the learning to continue. Sadly, it is not to be, and I am left to carry on with the lessons learned over my first 34 years on the planet. My lesson to those of you that have not yet joined this club, is to make every moment together special, so that you never look back with regret, wishing you had had one more conversation, one more coaching session, or that you had simply taken the time to tell her you love her once more.

So on this day, find those closest to you and enjoy your time together. Forget about the Hallmark cards and the nonsense. Instead, simply “be in the moment” that you will cherish for years to come.
